Almost seven months have gone by, and as we welcome the month of August, we also open our doors to a new batch of Korean dramas that will be airing. And we have a variety of genres to choose from. Whether you’re into romance, thriller, comedy, sci-fi, mystery, and even music, there’s at least one drama you can look forward to.
We’ll also finally be seeing the second season of Stranger, starring Bae Doo-na and Cho Seung-woo, and I know a lot of you have been waiting for that for three years. Not to mention the second season of Love Alarm, starring Kim So-hyun, Song Kang, and Jang Ga-ram, is also slated to premiere next month on Netflix, so it’s a double treat to all K-drama fans. Below are nine new K-dramas to watch this coming August:
We have romance in pretty much half of all the series that are produced every year, and majority of them seem to follow a pattern on how two people in the drama will eventually fall in love. But Love Is Annoying, but I Hate Being Lonely is just a bit different as it tells a love story of two people who dislike the idea of falling in love. They live under the same roof and want to try and consider romance, but at the same time, they don’t want to commit to one another. They find love bothersome, but they don’t want to feel alone either. The series stars Ji Hyun-woo (Love in Sadness) and Kim So-eun (That Man Oh Soo), who is coming back to the small screen after two years. The viewers are already setting their expectations on the lead couple’s onscreen chemistry.
August 15: Stranger 2 (Saturdays & Sundays on tvN)
Stranger 2 is probably one of the most anticipated series of 2020. Its first season was a commercial success, even winning the Grand Prize (Daesang) at the 54th Baeksang Arts Awards. It retains lead cast Cho Seung-woo (Life), who plays a prosecutor who lacks emotional and social intelligence, and Bae Doo-na (Kingdom 2), who plays a headstrong police lieutenant. Season 2 will be introducing a new case and conflict between the police and the prosecutors, who find themselves on opposing sides. Expectations are raised on the second season, after the first season made it to The New York Times’s list of Best International TV Shows of 2017. The cast had their first script reading back in January.
Ji Soo (My First First Love 2) is frequently cast in romance dramas, and many of them always feature him as a second lead character who never gets picked by the heroine. In When I Was Most Beautiful, Ji Soo will try his luck again to get the girl, but this time, with his brother as his rival. Starring alongside Im Soo-hyang (Graceful Family) and Ha Seok-jin (Your House Helper), he will complete the trio who will form the new love triangle in K-dramaland. Even the drama’s teaser is already heartbreaking, and viewers can already feel the chemistry between Ji Soo and Im Soo-hyang, and Ha Seok-jin.
Two music series are airing this August, but the two still have distinct elements. While Do You Like Brahms? seem somewhat serious and full of moments of struggles, Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol is quirky, funny, and has a bit of a mystery. Both dramas will feature romance as well. The series stars Lee Jae-wook (When the Weather Is Fine), Go Ara (Haechi), and Kim Joo-hun (It’s Okay to Not Be Okay), and follows the story of a mischievous and bubbly pianist who went bankrupt. She goes to La La Land, a piano academy in a small town, where she meets and falls for a free-spirited individual who seems mysterious.
Series with characters who lack emotional understanding have been a trend in the past, and it seems to be continuing until now. Like Stranger, Alice also features an emotionless detective who discovers the existence of time travelers through a space called “Alice.” While trying to prevent anything disastrous from happening, he meets a genius physicist who died in the past. Starring Joo Won (My Sassy Girl) and Kim Hee-sun (Room No. 9), Alice is one of the most anticipated K-dramas for 2020 since this will be Joo Won’s comeback drama after being discharged from his mandatory military enlistment last year.
Missing: The Other Side has been dropping thrilling teasers and posters to hype the viewers before their premiere episode drops next month. The series revolves around a mysterious village that holds the spirits of missing, dead people, and a team of odd, determined individuals who gear up to search for the bodies of these missing people and uncover the truth behind their sudden disappearance.
Starring Kim Min-jae (Dr. Romantic 2) and Park Eun-bin (Stove League), Do You Like Brahms? takes us inside a music university where a group of talented and musically gifted students struggle towards their dreams, romance, and the realities of life. After graduating with a business degree, Eun-bin’s character decides to pursue her passion in music and goes back to the university.
There, she meets Min-jae’s character, a piano prodigy who is known locally and internationally because of the competitions he has won since he was a child. Viewers and fans alike are already anticipating the chemistry of Park Eun-bin and Kim Min-jae, following the success of the projects they have taken part in in the past.
August: Love Alarm 2 (Netflix)
Genre: Romance, School, Drama
Main Cast: Kim So-hyun, Jung Ga-ram, Song Kang
Ranking as one of Netflix’s top releases last year, Love Alarm is back with a second season, with the original lead cast reprising their roles to pick up where the story left off in the previous season. Starring Kim So-hyun (The Tale of Nokdu), Song Kang (When the Devil Calls Your Name), and Jung Ga-ram (Mistress, When the Camellia Blooms), the series is one of Netflix’s originals. It centers on a mobile application that can detect if people within a certain radius has romantic feelings for the user.
The cast had their first official script reading back in February, but with the uncertainties brought about by the current health crisis, the exact day of its premiere is yet to be announced. Nonetheless, it was previously reported to air sometime in August. The Love Alarm franchise is the third Netflix original Korean series to have another season, following Kingdom and My First First Love.
