Friend, The Great Legacy which marked a milestone in Korean noir films, is back with a sequel after 12 years. The story takes place after Jun-seok (Yoo Oh-seong), who served 17 years in prison for murdering his friend Dong-su (Jang Dong-gun) in the first part, is released from prison. It is the story of Jun-seok and Seong-hoon (Kim Woo-bin), the son of Dong-soo, whom he met in prison, and reclaims the Busan gang that was stolen by Eun-gi (Jung Ho-bin) who betrayed him. While the first part dealt with the story of Dong-soo and Jun-seok, who were immersed in violent gang violence, in Friend 2, Seong-hoon finds out that Jun-seok, who treated him like his father, intervened in the death of his biological father, Dong-soo. becomes the center of this story.
Based on rough action scenes, the film inherited the lines of the first part, which dealt with loyalty and betrayal among gang members, but the line became thicker. If the first part evoked ‘nostalgia for the past’ with the men of the fist world, Friend 2 increases the intensity of the action and shows the typical ‘gangster noir’ that is hard to see in previous Korean movies.
