The Attorney tells the story of Song Woo-seok, a snobbish tax lawyer who has no money, no backbone, and even a short bag strap, and for the first time in his life, volunteers for a lawyer instead of money.
It was based on the ‘Burim Incident’ 32 years ago. The role of Song Woo-seok, played by Song Kang-ho, is even more so in that it reminds us of the days of the late former President Roh Moo-hyun as a lawyer.
According to Doosan Encyclopedia, the ‘Burim Incident’, meaning ‘the schoolchildren incident in Busan’, was the largest rigging operation in the history of the Busan region that took place in 1981 by the military dictatorship of the 5th Republic to secure a foundation for government in the early days of power.
In September of that year, under the direction of Prosecutor Choi Byung-guk, who is in charge of public security at the Busan District Prosecutors’ Office, students, teachers, and office workers were arrested without a warrant, who were holding a social science reading group through the Yangseo Cooperative in the Busan area. While illegally detained, he was subjected to murderous torture such as ‘water torture’ and ‘roast chicken torture’ as well as beating.
As a result, the stories of a reading group or a few sitting in a coffee shop were fabricated into ‘learning on signs of transfer’ and ‘praising and encouraging anti-state groups’ by an anti-state group that seeks to overthrow the government.
A total of 22 people were arrested, and some of them were unrelated to the extent that they came to the court to face trial for the first time. However, the prosecutors charged them with violating the National Security Act, Martial Law, and the Gypsies Act (Assembly and Demonstration Act) and demanded 3 to 10 years in prison, and the court sentenced them to 5 to 7 years in prison.
At that time, Roh Moo-hyun, Kim Kwang-il, and Moon Jae-in, who were lawyers in the Busan area, took charge of the defense free of charge. All those who were in prison were released on suspension of execution in December 1983, and after that, they were active at the center of the Busan pro-democracy movement. This incident, which is considered to be the largest rigging incident in Busan history, has since been recognized as a democratization movement.
