The King of Tears, Lee Bang-Won is a work that newly illuminates the figure of Lee Bang-won, a leader who took the lead in the founding of the Joseon Dynasty during the ‘Yeomal Seoncho’ era, when the old order of Goryeo was destroyed and a new order called Joseon was created.
Director Kim Hyung-il said, “The difference between KBS dramas and other historical dramas is the ‘theme consciousness’. It deals with the human figure who is troubled within the state, power, and politics. I decided that ‘The King of Tears Lee Bang-Wo’ was the person who could best express this theme,” he said.
He continued, “We want to deal with leadership that knows public values. In order to avoid the problem of historical distortion, we sought advice a lot. No need to worry. However, historical interpretations vary. I tried to put it in line with the aim of ‘The King of Tears Lee Bang-Wo’,” he said confidently.
In the drama, Joo Sang-wook plays Lee Bang-won, the third king of Joseon, Kim Young-cheol plays Lee Seong-gye, the first king of Joseon, and Park Jin-hee plays Lee Bang-won’s wife, Queen Wongyeong Min clan.
