The youth of 2019 are living in a harsh world, navigating the unstable job market, romance-less dating, and calculated marriages. However, there was once a time when things were even tougher than today. Confucian ideals, such as the separation of men and women from the age of seven, are strongly upheld by society. There are also strict rules about marriage that only allow people to marry within their social class, wealth, and age.

And they didn’t even get to see their future spouse until the day of the wedding! In this Joseon-era matchmaking romance, we meet three men each with a story of his own. They become matchmakers, an unusual profession for a man living in Joseon, and end up taking on the great feat of making a match for the King himself. In an unfortunate time when “No” was the answer to most questions, these three daring young men defy the rules of society. “You only live once, so might as well risk it all on love! Isn’t that right?”

Jeon Nok-Du is the son of a noble family. He is not happy that his family has arranged for him to marry a young girl. To avoid the marriage, Jeon Nok-Du runs away from home. He disguises himself as a woman and goes to a widow village. There, he meets Dong Dong-Ju who is an apprentice to become a gisaeng.

She does not want to become a gisaeng, but Dong Dong-Ju doesn’t have a choice. She happens to know that Jeon Nok-Du is not a woman and she hears the reason why he is hiding in the widow village. Jeon Nok-Du saves Dong Dong-Ju from a dangerous situation. She becomes Jeon Nok-Du’s adopted daughter and he decides to live in the widow village for 1 year.

  1. The Tale of Nokdu takes over KBS2’s Monday & Tuesday 22:00 time slot previously occupied by “I Wanna Hear Your Song” and will be followed by “How to Buy a Friend” on April 6, 2020.
