The sixth story of ‘Girls’ High School Ghost Stories’, which marked a milestone in the Korean horror movie genre by depicting the bizarre and terrifying situation that took place in a girls’ high school in 1998, welcomed the audience after 12 years.
The ‘Girls’ High School Ghost Stories’ series made the audience’s chatting cool by unraveling the absurdities of our society, such as the harmful effects of competition-oriented education and the problem of bullying, in a horror genre set in a school setting. At the same time, it is a popular horror series that played the role of sounding an alarm for the time.
The newly returned ‘Whispering Corridors 6: The Humming’ is similar to the first story in the series. While the film shows a homage to the ‘Girls’ High School Ghost Stories’ that opened the series, the story moves from the ‘student’ that the ‘Girls’ High School Ghost Stories’ series has focused on to the ‘teacher’.
The story largely progresses through Eun-Hee (Kim Seo-Hyung) and Ha-Young (Kim Hyun-Soo), and it mainly follows Eun-hee’s gaze. The past and the hidden truth of Eun-hee and Ha-young are similar, but they have in common that they are violence that occurred due to hierarchical order in the closed social space of a school.
The violence that passed from Eun-hee’s era to Ha-young’s era, and the inheritance of such violence, shows that the power relationship that was created through the hierarchical order and adults who do not reflect still dominates our society. It is said that the space that hides the repeated violence, the perpetrators who do not reflect, and the hierarchical order without criticism can only give people, that is, the students, only sorrow and pain.
As the story unfolds, the method of revealing to the audience the social problems hidden behind the devices that evoke fear tells us that ‘Alma mater’ also inherited the spirit of the previous ‘Girls’ High School Ghost Stories’ series. The time when the audience, surprised by the horror device, faces tears in fear in the second half, makes us look back on how our society made students tremble in fear.
